One of the cornerstones of our legislative efforts is securing funds for more research into Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The Department of Defense (DOD) maintains a Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) that funds research exclusive to topics or medical conditions on a list created by a committee in the Senate. Dear Senator, I am a constituent in your State and I am writing to ask you to work with colleagues on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee to include Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) as a condition eligible to be studied through the Department of Defense Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (DOD PRMRP). As you know, medical literature has found that GBS occurs at a higher rate in U.S. military personnel than the general population. Military personnel, particularly deployed personnel, face an elevated risk of infections, viruses, and other potential triggers for GBS. The PRMRP has been incredibly successful in supporting meaningful research projects for other conditions that disproportionately impact military personnel and occur as a result of military service. Most recently, a link between Zika and GBS has been discovered which impacts service members stationed abroad in impacted areas. Our medical researchers hope to leverage some of these annual opportunities to similarly improve care for GBS patients.
