will the pain go away?

i got ill in july of ’06, found out i had gbs in aug of ’06. Its now 11 months later. the nerve pain in my hands and feet are under control with gabapentin, but leaves my hand n feet numb. my feet have been swelled since sept of ’06, can’t wear shoes its so bad, water pills did not help, and they have never swelled before. can’t go back to work because of the nerve pain and swelling. will the pain ever go away? on my last visit to the neuro he said i was coming along. and to take the gabapentin 3 times a day. my question is will the nerve pain go away?

Hi: There is no way any of us can answer your question in a definite way, because everyone has different experiences of pain. My pain has not gone away after two years, but for some people the nerve pain has gone away. I would say that after 11 months it is really too early to tell-you need to give it at least another year and see how you are doing. Though my pain has not gone away I have good days and if I don’t overdo things the good days outnumber the bad days. I have also had to go to percocet to help with the bad days, which it does, and I have also learned to rest a lot more on the bad days, so, whether it goes away or not, there is a lot you can do to help keep it under control. I hope your pain does decrease, and as I said, you still are early in the recovery process which is a very slow one. Jeff

Hi,
I’m so sorry you are having so much pain. Perhaps your neuro doesn’t have you on a large enough dose of Gabapentin. There are people on this forum who are on all different dose levels. There should be better pain control, so maybe you could call your neuro and ask if you can increase. As far as the swelling is concerned, it’s been our experience that we tend to attribute all symptoms to GBS when some might actually be related to something else. Is is possible that you could have gout? Talk to your neuro and/or general practitioner about the swelling. Gout is easy to treat.
The pain will slowly subside.

hi t & welcome,
how much gabapentin do you take each time you take it? rest as often as you can w your feet elevated above your heart. took me years for my feet to unswell & lose their bright red color. even now, if i over do it, they hurt. take care. be well.

Dear T,
The Gabapentin just didn’t work for me, but Lyrica did. I think that for some people it doesn’t make a difference which one they take. Does the medication cause swelling? (my feet are swollen too) -

My GBS started Sept 06 and the swelling started when I started to walk in February….my feet and legs….and I am on no medication except for blood pressure which got high from the GBS. I also noticed that I have more and bigger veins on my feet. Anyone else notice this symptom?
