Stinger Running
Stinger Running

Congratulations to GBSer Andrew Stinger who completed the Inaugural ING Georgia Marathon on March 24 in Atlanta, Georgia. He endured an 18-week training program to prepare for the event. You might notice that his tee shirt says “Ask Me About GBS/CIDP.” Andrew lives in New York City where he works as a litigation paralegal. The GBS/CIDP Foundation is grateful for about $1000 from Andrew’s supporters. Andrew was diagnosed with GBS in July 2002. What an inspiration he is!

In 1999 I woke up one morning, tried to get up and found I was totally paralyzed from my eyes down. After many days of consultations, cat-scans, and nerve conduction test I was informed I had GBS. Before I had time to let that sink in, my respiratory system shut down completely, and I was put on a respirator at Toronto Western Hospital.

After many weeks in the hospital and many months of rehabilitation at Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Center, I had to learn to talk again, walk again, write again, and rebuild my strength. I was finally discharged still confined to a wheelchair. Having never fully recovered from the GBS I consulted with Dr. Angelika Hahn at London University Health Sciences Center who diagnosed me with CIDP.

On April 3rd 2007, my 67th birthday, I will be attempting to walk from my home in Bowmanville to the national conference for GBS/CIDP, to be held in Toronto on Saturday April 21st. To all my friends, former students, and fellow thespains it would mean so much to me if you could walk part of the way by my side if not in person, then in spirit. Also if you can, please make a donation so that we can learn more and hopefully find a cure for these
terrible diseases.
